Web 2.0 adaption in enterprises

Online-in the middle of nowhere

So finally this summer I experienced the sweet taste of beeing online from my summer house in the middle of nowhere. Where the sea meets the sun and where I am surrounded by forest and mountains. It has taken a couple of years. I remember 3 yrs ago, by that time it was amazing to be connected in 56 kb/s via GPRS. Today its 1,8 mb/s via HSDPA. Via Edge you can connect in 200-300 kb/s and for that you don´t need more than standard GSM-coverage. (But don´t forget your hardware such as PCMCIA-card for example - if the chip is´nt already in your laptop)

So now we are able to be online everywhere, how do we adapt to that? Interesting question. What services will providers market to us next? This year was the year of the mobile-always- connected- thing, we could see that from banners in the papers etc.. How will we change our behaviours when we can be online all time?

Something that caught my attention this summer is a new service called Soonr, it certainly comes from the thin client-world. I think this is very much what we can expect from the future.

How Does It Work?

Your mobile phone acts as a remote control for your computer. There is nothing to install on your phone because SoonR uses the features that are already built into your phone. You simply login into the SoonR website at www.soonr.com. SoonR can send you an SMS with the link to make it even easier.

In order to access your computer from your phone, you need to download a program (SoonR Desktop Agent) that runs on your computer, and define which folders you want to access from your phone. This program allows you to leverage applications installed on your computer such as Outlook, Mac Mail, Skype, or Desktop Search. That’s not all it does! It will optimize all the data that is sent to your phone, leveraging the superior power of your computer’s CPU.

The SoonR service is there to connect your computer to your phone and provide optimized versions of information stored on remote computers. When you make changes on your remote computer, the SoonR Desktop Agent program will update the information on the SoonR service so that it will immediately available on your mobile phone the next time you ask for it. The service also provides a place for information to be shared that works even when remote computers are turned off.

AjaxLife - Second Life In Your Web Browser

Katharine Berry, a student in the UK, has created an in-browser AJAX application that allows you to log into the virtual world of Second Life, but without all of the laggy graphics. This is a great way to pop in-world for a moment if you just want to chat with other residents, and as far as anybody else will be able to tell your avatar will look just fine (although mostly immobile).

While you can't yet initiate new IM sessions or use the Search functions (these are coming), you can reply to any incoming IMs and participate in local chat wherever your avatar happens to be. You can also teleport your avatar to other locations via an on-screen map, although once there you can't really walk around.

The interface is really simple, really fast, and works in Firefox, Internet Explorer, and newer versions of Safari. You can take it for a quick test drive by clicking here.

A must have with high wife acceptance factor

I often hear from my friends that they often turn to me when they are in the state of buying electronics and computer stuff. They say that I already have done the necessary research, read all the tests and searched at Pricerunner etc. Thats often the case. And when I find some new gadgets that I find very special - I will post a note here for you all.

Today I stumbled into a revolutionary gadget that has entered the 2nd generation - the universal remote control that is activity-based, is updated through the Internet from a database containing more than 80 thousands different IR enabled devices from approx 2,5 thousands manufacturers.

When I watch TV today, I have to start my digital set-top box, DVR, Receiver and my TV using 4 remote controls. In the new universal remote control I just click the activity "watch TV". Then every step described above, will automatically be executed. And from only one remote control.

What you do is that you plug in the universal remote control via USB to your desktop PC, and through the software that is shipped in the package, you actually program the process which is linked to respective activity. This is DIFFERENT from the traditional universal remote controls that have been out there for years.

So today after a long discussion with my wife last night (primary targetgroup) I got free hands to buy a Logitech Harmony 525 at Teknikmagasinet for 695 SEK. It has high WAF-factor (Wife acceptance factor). It is so nice with a space-blue light.....

Technology for farmers

It is the bane of every farmer's life. Someone carelessly leaves a gate open the next thing you know half your cattle have wandered off. Now scientists in Australia have come up with a solution: the virtual paddock.

After three years of research, they have developed a prototype fencing system using global positioning satellite (GPS) technology in a project that has been nicknamed Bovines Without Borders.

The system employs battery-powered collars which emit a sound to warn the cattle when they are approaching a virtual boundary line. If a cow wanders too near, the collar - which is fitted with a GPS chip - emits a warning hum. If the cow then continues on, it would receive a mild electric shock.

I´ve upgraded my camera

Last week my collegue asked me to recommend a good DSLR camera, she was going to enter the beautiful world of DSLR-photography. I did a fast processing job in my brain, and decided to sell my Canon EOS 300D. So last week I bought a Canon EOS 400D. I also finally completed my filter collection with Cokin P - 121M graduated grey (ND4).

I think it was a real garbain for her though. My plan was to use the batterygrip I already had, with the 400, but It does not fit, so she got the grip in the package for no extra cost and also an extra battery, but I love happy customers....

From Swedish to English

As my network of friends outside Sweden has grown more and more, I have decided to let my blog be available for my international friends as well. So from now on, it will be in english.

And as I use to say, its better to speak and write - perhaps not so gramatically well -than to be quiet.

iPhone - a religion that will revolutionize

I think all of you have noticed that apple finally released the iPhone. They even talked about it on the television news. And there are lots of photos, movies out there of course. Hitler got less coverage when he invaded Poland.
I think this movie from David Pogue at The New York Times is just awsome.

So, what exactly does the release of the iPhone mean in a historical perpective? My deepest belief is that it will drive the mobility industry towards more innovation and design. Finally we have a serious challanger to the traditional phonemakers. I am sick and tired by all those models that are released every single week around the planet from such vendors like HTC, Samsung just to mention some. They all look the same!
The iPod will drive touch-screening to the next level. And don´t forget Microsoft surface interface!
We will see new innovative user interfaces to come around the corner. Exept that, I don´t think the iPhone contain any other revolutionary functions, it is more the religion of a brand that once revolutionized the personal computer experience, and will do likewise to the mobile device.

Jag - en pulstränare

I tidigare inlägg skrev jag om pulsklockan Polar F6, lite raljerande och som en kul grej. Jag satte igång med lite mer informationsinhämtning och har nu blivit helt såld på pulsträning. Jag har sedan ett par månader tillbaka lyckats med konststycket att bli en regelbunden motionär.

Jag kör på Gym 2 ggr/veckan och Spinning 1/vecka. Mitt primära mål med träningen är att bränna bort ölmagen och få tillbaka konturerna i ansiktet. Efter idogt läsande allehanda artiklar på nätet så har jag nu en klar bild över hur jag ska träna för att nå mina mål. Eftersom fett förbränns effektivast när du tränar kring 70% av din maxpuls så är det så klart bra om du kan ha kontroll över hur hög din puls är när du tränar. Så självklart måste man då ha en pulsmätare, så jag köpte en Polar F6 som ligger ganska anständigt i pris, 1195 kr. Det gör ju inget att man dessutom kan föra över data från klockan till en webapplikation, där man kan analysera och planera sin träning i minsta detalj. Hög Yo-faktor! Nu ser man riktigt fram emot nästa gång man kan föra över träningsdata till webben! Man vill liksom fylla almanackan i webbapplikationen med data och njuta av statistik och progress.

Historia: Wifi alliance godkände 802.11N

På onsdagen skedde det första godkännandet av en Draft 2.0 av den nya wifi-standarden 802.11n. Ett formellt certifieringsprogram startar i senare delen av Juni. Sedan en tid tillbaka har vi sett konsumentprodukter hos elektronikaffärerna som baseras på 802.11n. Men det viktiga är att det certifieras som en standard, då börjar det hända saker som bekant. Onsdagens beslut innebär dock i praktiken att man kan lita på att 802.11n kommer att bli stabilt och det är i min tolkning klartecken att börja uppgradera infrastrukturen i hemmet redan nu.

Rufft så innebär 802.11n teoretiskt ca 200-300 megabit hastighet i ditt trådlösa nätverk vilket framförallt gynnar spel, multimedia och i praktiken betyder det förhoppningsvis att ungarna inte kommer att skrika "Farsan, det laggar, sluta ladda ner!". Gäller nu att försöka hitta WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) för 802.11n så uppgraderingen så småningom kan påbörjas.
